Topic: Character Hate

  • Oct. 22nd, 2007 at 12:49 PM
In an attempt to get things restarted here, and since I've got some spare time...

A topic!

So! Character Hate!

1. How do you usually portray a character you dislike in your fic?

2. What are your fic-reading habits when a character you dislike is involved? Do you stay away from fic involving them, or do you give the author's characterization a fair shot?

3. Thoughts on character hate in fandom communities? I know in Who this is a hugely hot topic (IE Rose and Martha hate).

I've always thought you shouldn't be able to tell from a writer's body of work which characters they dislike because it's a basic ability to keep people in-character - if a character's entirely made up of bad points and none of their canonical good points, or the rest of the cast suddenly hate them, then the fic's out of character (unless the character's like that in canon, of course.)

THAT is it in a nutshell. If they're doing their job, the character is rounded. The character may get a raw deal, or die accidently or whatever, but at least the character itself was rounded.

oh, that's a hard one. I only write in one fandom, but I genuinely like most of the characters. Although there's one that got his own spinoff and boy, did he turn into an ass. LOL And the other one I dislike, I couldn't stand him the moment he strolled on screen.

I try to keep them in character, unless I'm making them the bad guy for whatever reason. I only read stories with my OTP, so I don't really avoid stories with the characters I dislike (since the female part of the OTP dated them.

I try to avoid all the hooplah with hating characters. It just leads to much badness and hurt feelings.

It depends what it is you don't like about the characters. I always try to think of why I don't like them, first. If it's because they're a rival to my pairing, then I try to make them a worthy rival. After all, your Character A and Character B that you ship wouldn't be distracted by a horrible Character C, normally. Think of what A or B sees in that third party.

If it's just their personality, than I try to have them on their best behavior, try to get into their head and see their self-examination. I often try to redeem them, if they've done something specific to earn my dislike. Sometimes I redeem them by having them die heroic, altruistic deaths, but that's just me ;)

  1. I don't hate any characters. No character is so iredeemable (as a character out-text, not necessarily as a person in-text) that they can't come off well in the hands of a good writer.
  2. I don't avoid fanfiction because a given character is in it. I've been known to avoid pairings (I unsubscribed from alt.tv.buffy-v-slayer.creative for a year about 2000), but never a character.
  3. Most of the character hate in LJ Doctor Who fandom seems to be in locked posts and/or from people not on my flist; I only see reactions.

I have to confess to not really hating characters. Not even a character like Adam. They're there for a reason. Though i won't read fic that bashes a character... i just dont enjoy watching that sort of thing happen you know? and it usually makes for a bad story, imho. I will read stories with characters that aren't my favorite.

I think character hate is silly and childish. Of course, hate itself is a staple of fandom, especially DW fandom. They dont like new stuff, they dont like old stuff, they don't like purple stuff... you name it, there's a hating niche for it. But honestly... be a grownup. if you hate a character, just ignore 'em ;)
